Softball Unable To Gain Any Offensive Momentum In Crucial Sweep By Heidelberg

Gina Tosti pitched well in the second game for the Blue Streaks.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 With all 10 teams in the OAC still mathematically alive for the 4-team OAC Tournament and only six league games remaining at the start of the day the John Carroll University softball team and Heidelberg squared off in a pivotal doubleheader.
 
John Carroll desperately tried to gain momentum but was swept by visiting Heidelberg 4-2, 3-2. Heidelberg improved to 18-10, 7-7 OAC while John Carroll fell to 14-14, 7-7 OAC.
 
Game 1
Early fielding blunders handcuffed the Blue Streaks enabling the Student Princes to take the 4-2 decision in the first game.
 
John Carroll scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Morgan Robinson started the inning with a leadoff double. The Blue Streaks did their damage with two outs. Colleen Brady extended the inning reaching on a fielding error and advancing into scoring position on a throwing error. The duo came in to score on Lia Locey's single to center.
 
Heidelberg jumped on the board with a run in the third inning as Marissa Smego hit a 2-out single down the right field line.
 
The 'Berg added three runs in the fourth as the Student Princes strung together three straight hits to push across the first run of the inning. Lisa Simmons drove in the second Student Prince run with a sacrifice fly. Heidelberg pushed its lead to 4-0 on Caitl Overholt's 2-out double to the left center gap.
 
John Carroll looked to pick up momentum in the sixth inning with Carly Simecek leading off the inning with a single. Brady added a 1-out single down the left field line but Beckie Reid was robbed of a hit by a sliding Jami Wagner eliminated the rally but the Blue Streaks.
 
Byrnes fell to 12-7 on the year. The junior allowed nine hits and six walks to couple with six strikeouts.
 
Game Two
John Carroll jumped on Heidelberg starter Erin Chapman from the start in the first inning. However, a no-man's-land lineout double play halted the Blue Streaks' momentum.
 
Samantha Becker led off the first inning and scored on Robinson's 1-out RBI single up the middle. The Blue and Gold were posed to have a big inning but Alyssa Coleman lined into a double play catching Robinson in no-man's-land.
 
John Carroll pulled back within one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Locey broke up a string of 11 straight Blue Streaks being retired to give momentum back to JCU. The senior beat out an infield single and advanced into scoring position on Rebecca Reid's single. Locey would score on Ashlee Unrue's single.
 
Heidelberg would score three runs in the top of the second inning. The 'Berg's first four hitters reached to tie the game. Sophomore Gina Tosti recovered to induce a grounder to Locey who alertly threw to the plate. Wagner drove in the other two runs with a single up the middle.
 
Tosti took the loss to fell to 1-4 despite pitching well. The sophomore only allowed six hits while striking out five.
John Carroll travels to Capital for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 18.
