Dakota Thomas and the Blue Streaks had 31 shots but a season-low six goals in a loss to Mount Union
Box Score All season long, John Carroll's most productive quarter of scoring had been the first.
Tonight, an out-of-character slow start set the tone in what became an 8-6 loss to visiting Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game at Shula Stadium.
The Blue Streaks had never failed to score at least two goals in the opening period of any game in 2014. But after the first 15 minutes Wednesday evening, JCU was scoreless and down by a 1-0 count.
The Blue Streaks did not waste time in the second quarter jump starting its offense.
Stephen Leous scored his team-leading 32nd goal at the 14:29 mark, and
Brian Jaszka followed with 13:50 to play. John carroll had what would be its only lead of the night at 2-1.
But Mount Union had a response, scoring the final two goals of the half to send John Carroll to the locker room on the short end of the score for the first time at home this year.
The Purple Raiders continued the onslaught with two more goals to open the third and take a 5-2 advantage.
Despite a goal in the third by Declan o'Grady and one early in the fourth by
Gary Anile, Mount Union pushed its lead to 8-4 with just under six minutes to play.
The Blue Streaks attempted a furious rally as O'Grady and Anile added quick goals to cut the deficit to 8-6, and had a realistic opportunity with two minutes left to slice the gap to a single goal. Mount Union, however, forced a turnover near the crease and John Carroll never regained possession.
Mount Union improved to 10-3 with the win and 2-0 in the OAC. John Carroll, enduring its first losing streak as a program, slips to 9-3 and 0-2 in league play.
JCU outshot Mount Union, 31-29, and won 11 of 17 faceoffs. The big number tonight turned out to be turnovers as the Blue Streaks coughed up the ball 19 times, of which only six were caused.
