With head coach Nicole Loudin (far right) encouraging, Rebecca reid slides into third during John Carroll's six run second inning of game two
Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 In no way shape or form were the two games played today in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bracken Field indetical.
Except that both ended in identical "W" for John Carroll.
Despite producing just two hits, the Blue Streaks won the opener by a 3-1 score over visiting Otterbein. In the nightcap, John Carroll pounded out ten runs on ten hits for a 10-4 triumph to complete a Saturday afternoon sweep that most in the JCU camp would agree was essential.
John Carroll trailed 1-0 after the top of the first in the opening set. After
Samantha Becker drew a lead off walk and Eric Chiudioni followed suit,
Morgan Robinson stepped up and drilled a prodigious three-run homer over the left field fence to stake John Carroll a 3-1 lead.
That would be the last run scored of the game, and nearly the last hit for the Blue Streaks. Robinson had the only other hit, a one out single in the sixth.
It was on the shoulders of
Rachel Byrnes, and the junior hurler delivered. She scattered five hits over seven innings, and struck out eight while walking two. All five hits were singles.
The second game was in stark contrast to the first.
The contest began inauspiciously for the Blue Streaks, as three errors contributed largely to a pair of runs for Otterbein in the top frame of the first.
Then came the bottom of the second.
John Carroll unleashed seven hits in its turn at bat, crossing the plate six times to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 6-2 lead.
Carly Simecek led the inning off with a solo home run -- her fourth in the last four home games -- to get John Carroll on the board. Then, with one out, the hit parade began.
Colleen Brady,
Lia Locey, Beckie Reid,
Ashlee Unrue, Becker, and Chiudioni all reached base on consecutive at bats, stringing together six singles. All but Chiudioni came around to score.
Otterbein closed to within 6-4 in two runs in the fifth, but the Blue Streaks put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth. Reid plated two runs with the big hit of the inning, then came around to score as John Carroll finished off its second home sweep of 2014.
Byrnes worked all seven innings and gave up four runs (just two earned) in improving to 11-6. She became the fifth pitcher in JCU softball history to reach 30 career wins with that victory, joining Brittany Danilov (74 from 2009-12), Kristin Platz (42 from 2003-06), Charise Brigee (33 from 1992-95) and Samantha Thompson (33 from 2007-10).
John Carroll is now 13-11 overall and 7-5 (T-4th) in the OAC. Otterbein falls to 11-14 and 3-9 (T-9th) in league play
