John Cobos started JCU off well with a comeback 7-5 win over Heidelberg in the 125-pound bout
With another impending snowstorm on the horizon, the John Carroll University wrestling team went into a deep freeze in the upper weights on Tuesday evening at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in a dual meet with Heidelberg University.
The Blue Streaks saw their 18-7 lead quickly evaporate as the Student Princes won the last four matches of the meet to capture a 23-18 comeback victory.
Despite missing key members due to injury, the Blue and Gold started out strong.
John Cobos started off a bit slow for the Blue and Gold, falling behind to Heidelberg's Delian Schneider at the 125-pound weight level. But the third period belonged to Cobos.
While the senior entered the final period trailing 4-3 and in riding time by a 2:16 margin, Cobos found new life in the final minute of the third. Cobos gained an advantage and narrowed the riding time, besting Schneider by a 7-5 decision. Cobos' win granted JCU an early 3-0 upper hand.
The Blue Streaks were unable to build the lead in the next match. Mike Bucisko struggled against Heidelberg's Colin McDermitt at 133 pounds, as McDermitt racked up 3:42 of riding time. Bucisko eventually fell by major decision, 10-0, allowing Heidelberg to regain the lead, 4-3.
JCU's
John Connick and Heidelberg's Ian Gillespie remained locked in a stalemate for the majority of the battle at 141 pounds. Gillespie used a takedown late in the first and a great effort as time expired in the third to defeat Connick by decision, 7-0. Heidelberg's second consecutive shutout gave the Student Princes a 7-3 lead.
Co-OAC Wrestler of the Week
Dan Mirman absolutely dominated the next match for JCU at the 149-pound level. Building an 11-3 lead in the first period alone over Heidelberg's Damon Cheek, Mirman kept rolling as the match continued. By the time the dust settled, Mirman had a stunning 23-7 win by technical fall.
Mirman advanced to 19-4 on the year. With Mirman's outstanding victory, the Blue and Gold retook the lead, 8-7.
Not to be outdone, 157-pounder
Terner Gott also captured a big victory to help JCU build its lead. Gott rolled up a 6-2 lead over Heidelberg's Aaron Banko after the opening period and didn't let off the gas pedal in the next two periods. Gott walked away with a major decision, 17-6.
Like Mirman, Gott now stands at 19-4 this season. The Blue Streaks led 12-7 following Gott's triumph.
Thomas McNulty used the momentum from the previous two matches to get a critical victory for the Blue Streaks at 165 pounds. McNulty pinned Heidelberg's Myles Wright at the 2:12 mark of the first period to give JCU another burst of energy and an 18-7 lead. The dramatic victory handed McNulty his team-leading 20th win.
Unfortunately
Matthew Tusick could not keep the momentum going for the Blue Streaks at the 174-pound class. The junior held a 6-4 lead after two periods, but Brennan Kelly made a comeback in the final period, as Tusick ran out of gas in the waning minutes. Kelly used three take downs in he final 90 seconds for a 10-9 win that allowed the Student Princes to begin mounting their comeback, bringing the score to 18-10.
It turned out to be the swing match, as Heidelberg scores two major decisions and a technical fall in the final three matches to win going away.Â
With the loss, the Blue and Gold fall to 2-6 on the season an 0-2 in the OAC. Heidelberg improved to 10-10 and 2-0 against league foes.
