Champions: Men's Soccer Clinches OAC Regular Season Title

A week remains in the OAC men's soccer regular season. The regular season champion has been crowned.

That champion is John Carroll. The Blue Streaks captured their first OAC regular season title since 2005 and first OAC mark since the 2007 squad captured the OAC Tournament Title.

"I'm extremely proud of our entire team," said head coach Hector Marinaro. "They have put a tremendous amount of work in to clinch the OAC regular season title.

"At the same time we know we have to keep working and get better every day to prepare for the upcoming OAC Tournament."

Capital (9-6-1, 4-2-1 OAC) tried to spoil the festivities but three late first half goals by John Carroll (14-3-0, 7-0-0 OAC) gave the Blue Streaks the 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon in Bexley, Ohio. The win marked JCU's 11th in a row.

The Crusaders struck quick getting on the board in the 10th minute with Cheyn Roux coming through with his fifth goal of the year.

Brian Potocnik, one of the top players in Division III, made sure that lead would not stick. The senior had a hand in all three JCU goals, all of which came within a five minute stretch.

The Aurora, Ohio native set up Jacob Lombardo for the one-touch goal in the 39th minute to tie the game. He would go on to net his 15th goal less than two minutes later off of a feed from Justin Miller.

Potocnik would strike again in the 44th minute with his 16th goal of the season.

"Brian has been brilliant all year for us," said Marinaro. "He has scored some big goals and set up others very consistently throughout the season. We couldn't be happier for his success this season."

The Crusaders tried to mount a second half rally with Bobby Atkin cutting JCU's lead to one in the 58th minute.

Zach Fehrenbach made five saves in the win improving to 4-2-0 on the year.

John Carroll will serve as the top seed for the OAC Tournament to be held the week of November 3. More information on game times and opponents will be posted on www.jcusports.com when available.

John Carroll returns home to host Mount Union at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
