Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hats Off To Potocnik As JCU Men's Soccer Rolls To Seventh Consecutive Win

There would be no wild finish this time for the John Carroll men's soccer team.

On the heels of one of the strangest victories in Blue Streak history (5-4 in double overtime at Otterbein Wednesday), Saturday's night's affair could be labelled calm, cool and collected in comparison.

Shaking off an early penalty kick, the Blue Streaks scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 decision against the visting Wilmington College Fightin' Quakers on a pleasant October evening at Don Shula Stadium.

A hard tackle by keeper Derek Jenkins in the box set up a penalty kick in the 8th minute that Martin Holmquist finished off for a 1-0 Quakers lead.

Wilmington returned the favor less than three minutes later with a hand ball in the box. Brian Potocnik would drill in the equalizer at th 10:08 mark.

JCU then took the lead for good when Karol Boryka scored a goal in his fifth consecutive match, taking a feed from Jacob Lombardo in the 14th minute.

Despite a 10-5 advantage in shots, the score remained 2-1 in John Carroll's favor at the break.

The Blue Streaks weathered some early opportunities by Wilmington in the second half before taking complete control of the contest. JCU outshot the Fightin' Quakers, 10-4 in the second half.

Potocnik would ice the game with a pair of goals, the first on a pass from Lombardo in the 75th minute. The hat trick was completed in the 85th minute on an entry pass from Kevin Pachuta to Jesse Marinaro, whose quick drop off found Potocnik in space.

It was Potocnik's second career hat trick and his first in conference play.

John Carroll won the shots battle (20-9) while the corner kick battle was even (6-6).

Jenkins made five saves to improve to 7-1 on the season.

The win pushed John Carroll's win streak to seven, and its record to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington slipped to 5-6-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the OAC with the loss.
