Box Score 2 Emotions ran high for both John Carroll and Heidelberg at "Strikeout Cancer Day" on Saturday afternoon in Tiffin.
Luckily for the Blue Streaks, they put emotion aside and got back to their winning ways after stumbling in game one.
Trisha Pike came on to pitch in relief of
Gina Tosti in game two to salvage a split for the Blue Streaks against last place Heidelberg University. The 'Berg took the day's first contest, 2-1.
The Blue Streaks (25-9, 14-4) were unable to muster any offense in game one, as
Rachel Byrnes (18-2) recorded her first conference loss of the season despite giving up just one earned run on five hits.
Lia Locey had two of the Blue Streaks' six hits in the contest and scored the team's only run in the sixth inning.
The doubleheader was dedicated as "Strikeout Cancer Day," an event that has become an annual tradition in the OAC honoring those on the teams and in the community who have battled cancer.
Fittingly, it was first baseman
Ally Kleinhans playing hero for the Blue Streaks in game two. After missing the 2012 season, Kleinhans has not missed a beat in conference play.
Heidelberg (12-22, 2-16) held a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when Kleinhans punched an 0-2 fastball into left field, scoring two. The Blue Streaks would add two more in the inning off a
Colleen Brady sacrifice fly and a
Michaela Mackey RBI single.
One inning later, Kleinhans would break the game open with an RBI triple that shifted the momentum permanently in John Carroll's favor. Tosti slammed the door on Heidelberg, giving up one hit the rest of the way en route to her third win of the season.
With the loss in game one, the Blue Streaks were eliminated from contention for the regular season conference title. The team will likely be the second seed when the tournament opens up in Bexley next weekend. And with Sunday's doubleheader against Wittenberg cancelled, JCU will set its sights squarely on the OAC Tournament.
