The John Carroll men's tennis team played deep into the night Thursday in the hopes of upsetting one of the top teams in the conference. But the upset bid by the Blue Streaks fell one point short as Mount Union outlasted the host squad, 5-4, at Oakwood Club in South Euclid, Ohio.
Box Score
JCU seemed to set up their upset bid by taking two df the three doubles matches.
Ryan Mullaney and
Sean Graham picked off Nate Fockler and Nick Fockler by a 9-8 score in the #1 match, while
Sawyer Dina and
Paul Olexa also prevailed in the #2 match by the same score.
John Carroll needed to at least split the singles matches to earn the win, but only Mullaney at #1 and Olexa at #6 were able to emerge with victories.
The match appeared to hinge on the fate of the #5 match, where JCU's
Eric Grimaldi won the first set but fell in three to Ben Swope. The final set was decided seven games to five.
Mount Union improved to 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the OAC, while the Blue Streaks slipped to 2-9 and 1-3 in league play.
