Thomas McNulty was impressive in his Blue Streak debut, posting a major decision in JCU's 38-3 win over Case
Many say that the first match of a season is a foreshadowing of the rest of the season for a team.
If that is the case, the Blue Streaks have reason for optimism.
The John Carroll University wrestling squad easily took down the Case Western Reserve University Spartans at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Tuesday evening, 38-3. The Blue Streaks won at nine of the ten weight classes.
On an exciting day for the program, the Blue and Gold hosted over 20 alumni for the match. The Blue Streaks dominated from beginning to end, losing only one contest on the evening.
Sal Corrao started off the match, and his collegiate career, in a superb way. He defeated CWRU's Matt Moy by major decision, 13-2, holding the advantage for most of the 125-pound bout.
Trevor Medlang won by forfeit at the 133-pound level to up the Blue Streaks' lead to six. JCU's
Anthony Trocchio then captured a 2-1 victory in a low-scoring battle with Jeff Gould at the 141-pound weight class.
Next up for the Blue Streaks was veteran
Dan Mirman, who reached the NCAA Division III National Championships last season. The sophomore won by decision over CWRU's Luke Marcelli at 149 pounds, 15-9.
Terner Gott, the other Blue Streak to reach the National Championships last season, earned a win by forfeit at the 157-pound weight class by forfeit to extend JCU's lead to 16-0.
The Blue and Gold continued their dominance at the 165-pound weight class.
Thomas McNulty emerged victorious, by major decision over CWRU's Nick Lees, 15-3.
The Spartans claimed their lone victory of the day at the 174-pound division. David Brunk defeated
Steven Schmitz by decision 8-5 to narrow the JCU lead to 26-3.
But the Blue Streaks would not allow the Spartans to pick up any easy points at the end of the match.
Todd Gaydosh won by decision over Conor Driscoll at the 184-pound weight class, 8-2.
Freshman
Isen Vajusi then held on for a 14-13 victory over Eric Sullivan in the final contest of the night. Vajusi held a significant advantage over Sullivan at the beginning of the match, and almost lost it as Sullivan made a fierce comeback. But the freshman dug deep and held on for the victory, using a late takedown in the final 25 seconds to provide the necessary cushion.
Will Porter won by forfeit at the 285-pound class to end the match and make the final score 38-3.
The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Nov. 16 at the Trine Open in Trine, Indiana.
