Kay Akerly (15) scored JCU's only goal on an assist from Genny Goergen (17) and Nicki Bohrer
Box Score Coming off of a weather-delayed win the previous night, the John Carroll women's soccer team was looking to improve to 2-0 in the 2012 Carroll Classic against Grove City.
However, a slow start, coupled with missed opportunities and late defensive struggles spelled doom for the Blue Streaks in a 2-1 double overtime loss.
Despite heavy rains through the night and threatening clouds in the morning, the match started promptly at 2:00 PM, as scheduled.
Both Grove City and John Carroll had quality opportunities throughout the first half, but a combination of strong defense and quick keeper reactions kept the ball out of the back of the net.
Neither team gave any less than a full effort, and after more than ten minutes of scoreless play in the second half, JCU broke the stalemate.
Kay Akerly, assisted by
Genny Goergen and
Nicki Bohrer, was able to break away from tight Grove City defending and strike the ball into the net from over 20 yards out. The goal was Akerly's second on the season.
John Carroll then turned its focus to defending the lead. The Wolverines had other plans.
With less than ten minutes remaining in regulation, Grove City answered with a quick goal. A ball, crossed from the outside wing of the field, was handled well by Shannon Bishop and directed easily into the back of the net.
Regulation ended quickly and the first overtime period finished similarly, with close calls but no goals to be had. Finally, during the second overtime period, Grove City's Sam Weber finished off the Blue Streaks with a quick redirect towards the net.
The Blue Streaks, despite the late lead in regulation, allowed Grove City to score two unanswered goals and take the victory.
With the loss, JCU drops to 1-3, while Grove City improves to 3-0-1 in 2012.
