Boban Cancar knocked in his first career goal, giving the Blue Streaks an early lead
Box Score After the alumni game which celebrated the late Andrew “Dewey” McCarthy, the Blue Streaks ended their first Ohio Athletic Conference game with a tie. Both the Capital University and John Carroll ended with a final score of 1-1.
Andrew “Dewey” McCarthy was a former soccer player that graduated in 1981. Forever a Blue Streak, McCarthy sadly passed away two years after graduation. Thirty one years later, John Carroll keeps his tradition alive by asking alumni to come and support with an alumni weekend. While there, they can make contributions to the Andrew “Dewey” McCarthy Scholarship fund.
Being the 27th all-time meeting between these two rivals, John Carroll owns a 21-7 advantage over Capital. The last time these two teams met, the Crusaders emerged victorious, 0-2.
Today was a different story for both teams.
After a scoreless 20 minutes, the Blue Streaks decided to take matters into their own hands by putting themselves on the score board. Junior midfielder
Jon Smola passed a fierce ball to teammate sophomore
Brian Potocnik. From there, Potocnik saw junior
Boban Cancar wide open. Cancar scored his first goal of the season and his collegiate career.
The Capital Crusaders decided to respond to them by tying up the score. Junior Tim McCarthy made his second goal of the season with an assist by Al Argyris. This sent them into halftime, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.
The game remained tied for the entire second half, first overtime, and second. The two teams kept a grueling battle with the phenomenal defense, yet the ball could not connect in terms of offense. Goalkeepers were on high alert with the numerous amounts of saves which eventually lead to a second round of overtime where they ended by sharing a score of one.
Crusaders goes (5-3-3) overall and 0-0-1 in OAC while the Blue Streaks also added to their overall record, 4-5-1, while tying their first OAC match of the season 0-0-1.
