First the shutout streak went by the wayside, then the win streak fell as well.

It took a barrage of second half goals by visiting Case Reserve to put an end to a pair of  impressive John Carroll streaks in a 3-0 decision at Don Shula Stadium Monday night.

The Blue Streaks hosted Case in what was their final non-conference match of the season. After winning five of their last six matches and four in a row by shutout, the Blue Streaks were hoping for one final and major test heading into conference play.

A major test they got.

The first half had both teams scoreless, with opportunities on both sides. John Carroll goalkeeper Haley McDonald's play was a huge reason the Spartans stayed off the scoreboard early, turning in a stellar first half with three crucial saves, including a diving save to her right on a well struck ball by Leah Levey in the 17th minute.

After a scoreless and relatively evenly matched first half, the Spartans were able to find the back of the net three times against the John Carroll University women's soccer team, who had gone over 400 minutes witout allowing a goal since an overtime loss against Grove City College on September 8.

The second half saw Case control the play early on, leading to a goal in the 56th minute by Jessie Sabers, with an assist from the corner kick of Deena Levey. In the 70th minute, Deena Levey would once again assist a Case goal as her corner kick was headed in by Maeve Goede.

Deena Levey struck for a third time, this time on her own. She picked up a loose ball from a Blue Streak defender and ripped a shot for an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute.

“Not the outcome we wanted, but I'm glad we played the top competition in the area as we're getting ready for the conference,” remarked John Carroll head coach Michael Marich following the game. “We've played five of the top ten teams in our region, hopefully preparing us for conference play this weekend.”

Case outshot the Blue Streaks 16-8, with an 11-4 advantage in the second half. McDonald finished the game with seven saves.

The Spartans improve to 5-2-2 on the season, while John Carroll falls to 5-4

Capital will visit University Heights this Saturday, in the Blue Streaks' 2012 OAC debut.
