John Carroll Swimmers Finish First Semester By Squaring Off Against Upper Division Opposition

After a strong weekend at home against both Defiance and Wilmington, both the men's and women's John Carroll University swimming and diving teams struggled to find their stride on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the Cleveland College Dual Meet Invitational.

Competing against Notre Dame College, Case Western Reserve University, Canisius College and host Cleveland State University, the Blue Streaks had trouble as they fell to all four teams at the Invitational.

Despite the outcome not being exactly what the Blue and Gold may have hoped for, there were more than a few solid performances from a number of different Blue Streaks.

In the women's 200 Yard Medley Relay, the diverse quartet of senior Maggie Donoghue, freshman Lindsey Fano, junior Rachael Libertin and sophomore Torri Watson claimed sixth place with a finish time of 1:59.59. On the men's side of the bracket in the same event, sophomore Nick Bockanic, freshman Filip Crncek, junior Evan Coury and senior Drew Edson were also able to finish in the top eight, taking seventh place with a time of 1:43.95.

Watson again made her mark as she picked up an eighth place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:04.03 while also finishing eighth in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 57.25. As for the men's team, junior David Sved also performed well in his respective Freestyle events, taking seventh in the 50 Yard with a time of 22.35 while claiming third place in the 100 Yard with a finish time of 49.28.

The Blue Streaks picked up a sixth place finish in the women's 200 Yard IM event as Fano finished with an overall time of 2:20.73. Shortly after, Libertin again helped JCU's cause as she took eighth place in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a finish time of 1:04.71.

Senior Megan Carrig stepped up with a seventh place finish of her own in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a final time of 1:12.89. Meanwhile, Edson finished eighth in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:01.10.

In the final event of the night, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the women's quartet of senior Rachael Mizner, junior Lindsay Eddingfield, sophomore Katii Sheffield and senior Brittany Bockanic was able to secure a fifth place finish with a time of 1:48.60.
