Elissa Day (#14) scored 11 points and hit numerous clutch shots down the stretch for John Carroll
Box Score For the John Carroll University women's basketball team, conditioning made all the difference in the longest game in school history.
Hosting Case Western Reserve on Wednesday night in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, the Blue Streaks survived a marathon contest, defeating the Spartans 100-97 in four overtimes.
"Our conditioning kept us fighting," said freshman guard
Erin Mog following the game. Mog, who was exceptional throughout the quartet of extra periods, led the Blue Streaks in scoring and nearly recorded a triple-double with 24 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists.
After JCU jumped out to an early 14-4 lead, Case finished the first half on a 28-8 run, taking a 32-22 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
"Coming into the second half, we knew we made a lot of mistakes," said 14-year head coach Kristie Maravalli after the game.
John Carroll committed 15 turnovers and shot just 33.3% from the free throw line in the first period.
The Blue Streaks opened the second half on a 17-7 run to tie things up at 39 with 14:42 to play. JCU made five of seven 3-pointers to erase the ten-point deficit.
After a tight contest down the stretch, the score remained tied at 65 at the end of regulation.
The first overtime was scoreless until its final two minutes, and ended with both teams tied at 69. The second overtime period was a similar story, as each team scored just six points. The third and fourth overtime periods featured higher scoring for both teams, culminating with a fantastic finish for the home team.
In the fourth extra stanza, the teams traded blows and free throws until the score stood at 97-97 with 28 seconds on the clock following two Iacano free tosses.
Mog would make a lay-up with 14 seconds left but missed the bonus free throw. As Case scrambled to get up court down by two points, Mog stole a pass from Erica Iafelice and was fouled immediately. She made one of two free throws with just under five seconds left.
Out of timeouts, Case could not muster a potential game tying shot as time expired.
John Carroll (4-0) won the longest game in program history thanks to 24 points from Mog, who nearly recorded a triple double with nine points and nine rebounds. Spahar added 20 points while
Beth Switzler and Allison Lustig added 18 points apiece. JCU had a decent shooting night from the field (35-74, .473) and arc (9-19, .474) but was hindered by an awful night at the charity stripe (21-45, .467)
Senior Evy Iacano was outstanding in the losing effort for Case (3-3), scoring a school record 37 points (including 8-8 free throws) to lead all scorers. Although the Spartans committed over twice as many fouls as the Blue Streaks, Case had the clear advantage in free throws, shooting 71.4% (15-21). In fact, Case did not miss a free throw shot until the third overtime period.
The John Carroll women are now off to a 4-0 start for the first time since the 1993-1994 season, and gain encouragement after beating a Case team that has already defeated two OAC teams this season.
With a win in its home opener, JCU is now 17-10 all-time against the Spartans.
