John Carroll piled up a number of points early Tuesday evening in its Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling opener at Heidelberg

Turns out they were all needed.

The visiting Blue Streaks won four of the first five bouts, then held off a Heidelberg rally to score a 19-18 win over the Student Princes.

John Cobos got the night started with a win over Delian Schneider at 125 pounds. Schneider placed fourth at the Florida Citrus Open less than two weeks prior.

Kevin Nycz may have scored the most unexpected victory of evening for the Blue Streaks. In the opening round of the Citrus Open, Jake Weisman defeated Nycz by a 9-6 score and went on to place eighth in the tournament. Nycz exacted a bit of revenge Tuesday, posting a 6-4 overtime victory at 133 pounds.

After Chris Osborne got the better of Jake Rininger at 141 to get Heidelberg on the board, John Carroll would open up a 16-3 lead thanks to a major decision by Greg Ryan at 149 and a pin by Terner Gott at 157.

The tide began to turn at 165 pounds, where Sean Gill suffered a rare defeat this season, falling by a 6-5 count to Justin Wharton. Then, in an epic three overtime affair, Jeremy Stepp outlasted JCU's Todd Gaydosh at 174 by a score of 4-2.

Those close bouts squeezed John Carroll's lead down to 16-9.

Bryan Steinmetz gave the Blue Streaks the breathing room they would need, earning a hard fought 4-1 decision at 184 pounds.

Heidelberg would need a minor miracle to pull out the win, and the miracle flew out the window despite a 5-0 decision at 197 by Andy Lovins over Jim Nemunaitis.

A pin at 285 brought the Student Princes to within a single point for the final margin.

John Carroll is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the OAC, while Heidelberg slips to 2-6 and 0-1.
