Sweep Of Polar Bears Puts Blue Streaks Back In OAC Baseball Tournament

Aaron Miller put the finishing touches on John Carroll's 9-0 game one win that helped put the Blue Streaks into the OAC postseason tournament
Heading into today's Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ohio Northern, the John Carroll baseball team knew it needed just one win to qualify for the league postseason tournament for the third consecutive season.

The Blue Streaks got they win they needed, then completed the sweep for good measure.

For the second consecutive weekend, JCU senior Tom Schaberl pitched a complete game shutout as the Streaks blanked the host Polar Bears, 9-0. In the nightcap, a late rally snapped a 2-2 tie as John Carroll rolled to a 5-2 win.

Box Scores:  Game One  /  Game Two

In the opener, Schaberl allowed just one hit in seven innings of work -- a one out double in the third. He struck out eight and walked none in improving to 4-1 on the year.

His offense took a while to get going. A single run was scored in the first four innings, and it was courtesy of a Dan Potter sacrifice fly.

The bats woke up in the fifth. Chris Larry broke it open with a two-run single, after which Brian Benander drove in a run as part of a four-run frame.

Ryan Konsler had an RBI hit in the sixth, and Aaron Miller punched a three-run homer in the seventh to put the final touches on the win that catapulted the Blue Streaks into the OAC Tournament for a third consecutive year.

In the second game, JCU had single tallies in the third and seventh innings, but a two-run bottom of the seventh left the score deadlocked at 2-2.

Larry and Benander would come up big again. A two-out double by larry followed by an RBI single by benander that scored Larry gave the Streaks a 3-2 advantage.

In the top of the ninth, insurance runs were drive in courtsey of Joe Veltri and Mike Mancuso.

Pat O'Brien, one of six pitchers used by the Blue Streaks, picked up the win while Doug Finley recorded a scoreless ninth for his team-leading fourth save.

JCU completes the regular season 18=18 overall and 11-7 in the OAC.
