JCU captured at least a share of the program's first OHio Athletic Conference regular season championship with a pair of wins at Wilmington
It was a long weekend on the road but well worth it for the John Carroll softball team ... historically speaking.
Two wins over Heidelberg Friday and two more against Wilmington Saturday netted John Carroll at least a share of its first Ohio Athletic Conference regular season softball championship.
JCU needed just six innings to polish off game one by an 8-0 count, then used 12 runs to subdue the host Quakers in game two.
Box Scores:
Game One /
Game Two
John Carroll's four wins this weekend completes its OAc schedule with a record of 14 wins and four losses. No matter what happens tomorrow involving Ohio Northern (currently 12-4 with two games remaining against Wilmington), the Blue Streaks can do no worse than finish tied for first place.
If the two teams tie for first, Ohio Northern would be the #1 seed in next week's OAC Tournament due to a tiebreaker procedure. Anything less than an Ohio Northern sweep of Wilmington Sunday would gave JCU the #1 seed and an outright league championship.
JCU held a 1-0 lead through three innings of game one thanks to an
Ally Kleinhans sacrifice fly, but the offense warmed up starting in the fourth. JCU plated two runs in that frame thanks to RBI singles from Kleinhans and
Anna Fach.
The Blue Streaks that used a pair of home runs from
Samantha Becker (solo in the fifth, two-run shot in the sixth) and two more runs driven in by Kleinhans to ice the game away.
Brittany Danilov was dominant again, striking out nine while allowing just two hits and two walks. She is now 16-7 on the year.
A seven-run second inning highlighted the nightcap for the Blue Streaks, who would go on to prevail 12-5. Fach, Becker,
Mackenzie Griffin,
Erin Riccardi, Olivia Mathews and Kleinhans all drove in runs as part of the second inning bonanza.
At one point, the Quakers pulled to within 7-4 with four runs in the fifth, but JCU responded with three more runs in the top of the sixth -- two driven in by Mathews -- to put the game out of reach.
Trisha Pike worked a complete game, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out five in seven innings. She is now 8-2 in her rookie campaign.
John Carroll is now 26-10 on the year with just a non-conference doubleheader with Notre Dame left to play in the regular season.
