Tony Evanko was one of five seniors to win on their final home Saturday at Schweickert Field
Dramatic finishes or come-from-behind victories are good to get, but on senior days, a much better plan is to leave the drama out and lead from wire-to-wire.
That plan was perfectly executed Saturday at Schweickert Field by the home standing John Carroll Blue Streaks, who never trailed at any part of a doubleheader sweep of Wilmington College. The five active seniors on the JCU roster tasted victory in their final career conference home games, winning 6-0 in game one and 9-4 in game two.

Game One /
Game Two
Tom Schaberl was the story of the opener, as the senior starter pitched his first career complete game shutout. He held the Quakers to a pair of singles while striking out seven and walking none.
The only help he really needed was also senior supplied. Johnny Hastings drove in two runs in the first inning with an RBI double, scoring fellow seniors
Chris Larry and
Brian Benander.
JCU tacked on two more runs in the second inning on a Benander double, then added two more in the fourth -- one on an RBI hit by
Aaron Miller.
Schaberl improved to 3-1 on the year with his first complete game win since April 16, 2009.
Another senior started game two, as
Tony Evanko -- hurt much of the year -- made his first home start since May 8, 2010. Evanko worked four innings and gave up just two runs.
Robbie Bellusci worked the final five and also allowed just two runs to improve to 3-3.
In the meantime, the JCU offense remained on fire, ripping off 14 hits, four off the bat of
Tom Hickey.
The game was relatively close until the sixth inning. Already ahead 4-2, JCU scored five times in the bottom of the frame. Two errors coupled with four hits -- including RBI lashes by Larry, Hastings, Miller,
Dan Potter and
Joe Veltri, put the game out of reach.
John Carroll improved to 16-15 overall -- its first time over .500 since March 19 -- and more importantly 9-5 (tied for 3rd with Mount Union) in the OAC. Wilmington falls to 9-18 overall and 4-10 in league play.
