Olivia Mathews had a big play at the plate and in the field during John Carroll's win over Lebanon Valley
John Carroll scored a run in the sixth inning, then broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the seventh to post a 2-1 victory Thursday at Clermont, Florida, over Lebanon Valley College.
In a game that was played seven hours later than its originally scheduled time of 9:30 a.m. due to rain, neither team could cash in on early scoring opportunities.
John Carroll's defense came up with a big play in the fourth, as
Erin Riccardi (North Canton, Hoover),
Olivia Mathews (Suffield, OH, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) and
Mackenzie Griffin (Lake Oswego, OR, Lakeridge) teamed up with a double play to end a scoring threat. Riccardi threw to Mathews at first, who then threw to Griffin at home to get the third out.
The Blue Streaks broke through in the sixth inning, when
Samantha Becker (Roselle, IL, Lake Park)scored
Angela Vistocco (Victor, NY, Victor) from second with an RBi single.
The Dutchmen responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Chelsea Kehr, but the Streaks answered back in the top of the seventh.
It was Mathews playing offensive hero this time, driving home
Michelle Murphy (Erie, PA, Villa Maria Academy) with the game-winning run.
JCU outhit Lebanon Valley, 8-6, in support of
Brittany Danilov (Canfield, OH, Canfield), who struck out six in seven innings of work.
With the win, John Carroll improves to 4-1.
