Lambert Puts Clamps On A JCU Wrestling Victory in Final Regular Season Home Dual Meet

Senior 285-pounder Tim Lambert scored a memorable win in his final career home dual meet
It was fitting that the only four-year senior in the line-up had the outcome of his final career home dual meet rest squarely on his broad shoulders.

So it came to be for Tim Lambert (Chicago, IL, Mount Carmel) that John Carroll University needed minimally a victory by decision in his 285-pound bout to hold on for a victory over Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University Friday night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Lambert delivered more than that.

His first period pin improved a three-point lead into a 21-12 Blue Streaks victory over the visiting Student Princes.

JCU finished the dual meet season 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the OAC. Heidelberg fell to 9-11-2 and 2-4 in league action.

The home team got out to a 9-0 lead when John Cobos (Avon Lake, OH, Lakewood St. Edward) (125), Kevin Nycz (Parma, OH, Holy Name) (133) and Greg Ryan (Warren, OH, Howland) (141) all produced wins. But Heidelberg would square the match with wins at 149, 157 and 165.

The defending OAC champion Student Princes continued their upsurge at 174 pounds as Dayne Williams used a first period takedown and near fall to build a 5-0 lead over JCU freshman Todd Gaydosh (North Royalton, OH, Parma Padua Franciscan).

But the Blue Streaks rookie fought back, scoring a takedown in the final second of regulation to force overtime at 6-6. Then, with two seconds left in the first period of sudden victory, Gaydosh sealed the win with a takedown at the edge of the mat.

Bryan Steinmetz (Port Washington, WI, Port Washington) followed Gaydosh's emotional win with a 10-6 decision to build the John Carroll lead to 15-9, but Heidelberg closed to within three points when Jason Russell edged JCU's only other senior by an 8-7 score at 197 pounds.

That set the stage for Lambert, who got a takedown 90 seconds into the match, and then worked Sean Slee into a cradle and recorded the match-clinching pin at the 2:54 mark.
