Volleyball Battles But Falls To #6 Ranked Heidelberg

| By:
Coming into Tuesday night's match against the visiting 'Berg of Heidelberg University, the John Carroll University Blue Streaks were the clear underdog in the contest, and though the Streaks put pressure on the nationally-ranked 'Berg in the final two games, their upset bid came up short.

JCU came in with an overall record of 9-14 on the season, including an 0-5 mark in OAC play. Meanwhile, Heidelberg entered the contest sporting an overall record of 23-2, including a perfect 5-0 OAC record.

The 'Berg, who came into the match against JCU as the sixth-ranked team in the Division III women's volleyball, had only lost to the currently fourth-ranked Wittenberg College and top-ranked Calvin College this season. With the match between the two teams being played at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, the Blue Streaks had to rely on using the home crowd to their advantage.

In the opening set, the Streaks found themselves trailing early as Heidelberg won nine of the first twelve points. The 'Berg continued their impressive play throughout the remainder of the first set, winning by a score of 25-10.

The home team showed signs of resilience early in the second game, as they won nine of the first 19 points. Heidelberg managed to avoid a rally by the Blue Streaks late in the set and picked up the 25-17 win.

In the third set, JCU furthermore displayed that same gritty resilience as they battled throughout the entire game. However, after trailing only 20-18, the 'Berg scored five of the next six points to take the game and the match, 25-19.

Junior Sarah Slagle led the Streaks with five kills, while junior Emily Bendzak and sophomore Gina Catania had seven digs apiece. Junior Marian Bevington paced the 'Berg with 11 kills.

With the 3-0 loss to Heidelberg, the Blue Streaks are now 9-15 overall, 0-6 in the OAC. With only three regular season contests remaining on their schedule, the Blue Streaks are short on time but still have an opportunity to compete for a berth in the OAC Tournament, which begins on November 1st.
