A late offensive burst by the John Carroll women's soccer team sent the match into overtime, but it was not enough to translate into a victory as the College of Wooster prevailed by a 2-1 count Thursday night at Don Shula Stadium.
Box Score
Despite an intense first half from both teams, the score remained 0-0 at the end of the period.
After outshooting Wooster, 7-3, in the opening 45 minutes, the Fighting Scots began to turn the tables in the second half. The tie was broken during the 80th minute as sophomore Erika Kay scored a goal to put Wooster ahead.
The Blue Streaks made a valiant effort to respond, and looked to push the ball up the field. Their efforts were rewarded when senior
Betsy Haigh flagged down a
Valerie Korb corner kick and centered a pass to senior
Rachel Grdina, who put in a goal that would tie the match at the 87:03 mark.
The score of the match remained 1-1 at the end of regulation, sending the match into overtime.
John Carroll nearly seized the match in the opening seconds of the extra period when
Alicia Sovacool raced down the right side after the start, and whistled a shot that Wooster keeper Michele Ring had to reach back on to make a great save.
When Wooster had its chance minutes later, it would be taken full advantage of. Kay beat the JCU defense on the right side and slipped a pass to Paige Piper, who sent it to the right corner for the match winner at the 93:16 mark.
This loss made the Blue Streaks fall to 3-5-1 on the season, including 0-3-1 in overtime. Wooster improved to 6-3 on the year.
The Blue Streaks, playing for the second time in three days, showed heart throughout the entire match but it would not be enough for JCU to avoid its first home loss of 2010.

“We played a tough first half, but fatigue may have been a factor in the second half,” said head coach Tracy Blasius afterwards. “I felt that the outcome could have easily gone either way.”
