Sometimes it's nice just to go home.
The John Carroll University women's soccer team found that to ring true as they picked up their first win of 2010 in their home opener, knocking off Grove City College 2-0 in the first game of the Carroll Classic.
Box Score
The Blue Streaks got on the board early and never looked back thanks to a goal off the foot of senior
Betsy Haigh seven minutes into the game. Haigh scored off a pass from freshman
Genny Goergen, which was her first collegiate assist.
John Carroll added a goal in the 64th minute when freshman
Sarah Bolton came off the bench and provided instant offense. Bolton received the corner kick from senior
Valerie Korb near the back post and pounded it into the bag of the net for her first career goal, providing the Blue Streaks with some breathing room.
After the game, Haigh was quick to pass off credit to her teammates.
"I'm more excited for the team ," Haigh said. "We came out ready to play from the whistle, and it feels really good to get that first win."
The victory, which improves John Carroll to 1-3, handed Grove City its first loss of the season after starting out 2-0. The Wolverines entered the game outscoring their opponents 7-0
JCU senior goalkeeper
Molly Gradowski picked up her first win of the season, and also recorded her first shutout of the season and ninth of her career.
John Carroll head coach Tracy Blasius was pleased after the game.
"It's a good starting point," she said. "We didn't play a complete game, but I was pleased with a lot of what I saw and it's always nice to win."
The Blue Streaks will look to win again and repeat the good feelings on Saturday afternoon when they host Oberlin College at 2:15. Because of the Classic formula, Friday's games have no bearing on Saturday's matchups which were pre-determined.
