Tough Endings Leads To Pair Of Losses For JCU Softball At Denison

Olivia Matthews was 2-5 with two RBI in John Carroll's second game against Denison

The weather was great but the outcomes were somewhat tumultuous for the John Carroll softball team at Denison University Wednesday afternoon

JCU dropped game one by a 2-0 count before losing on a walk-off home run in a wild 13-12 nightcap.

Box Scores: Game 1  /  Game 2

A pitcher's duel broke out in the opener, as the two teams combined for just two runs on 12 hots over seven innings. Trouble was, both runs belonged to the Big Red, as the home team put up single tallies in the third and sixth inning.

JCU stranded eight base runners in siffering its first shutout loss of 2010 and just its third in the last two seasons.

The second game featured a wild ending. The Blue Streaks took a 7-3 lead in the fourth inning thanks to a six-run outburst in their half of the frame keyed by a grand slam from Michelle Murphy.

But Denison would put up a six-spot of its own in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-7 lead.

John Carroll answered right back in the top of the seventh. Olivia Matthews stood to be the hero when, with the score tied 10-10, she doubled home a pair of runs to cap a five run inning.

But JCU's 12-10 advantage would not hold up. With two outs and two on, Denison's Alex Murray ended the contest with a game winning three-run homer over the wall in left field.

The sweep gives Denison a 6-6 record, while the Blue Streaks drop to 7-7 on the year.
