Brian Benander scored the tying run and drove in the winning run at Ohio Wesleyan
The math was simple for the John Carroll baseball team Wednesday at Ohio Wesleyan. Six by four led to a win in ten.
Six different pitchers combined to limit the host Battling Bishops to four hits, enabling the offense to eventually break through and win the game by a 3-2 score in ten innings.
Box Score
John Moonan (Rochester, NY, McQuaid Jesuit) started the contest, and was followed by Chris Eggleton (Brecksville, OH, Brecksville ), Tom Schaberl (Richmond Heights, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius), Michael Konya (Twinsburg, OH, St. Ignatius), Adam Jenkins (Amherst, NY, Amherst Central) and Michael Eden (Aurora, OH, Aurora). The sextet worked a combined ten innings and allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out five and walking two.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, and held that advantage until the eighth inning. It appeared the eighth inning would also go by without incident until Joe Veltri (Rochester Mills, MI, Notre Dame Preparatory) singled with two outs. After Veltri stole second base, John Skomra (Buffalo, NY, Canisius) would plate him with an RBI double that cut JCU's deficit to 2-1.
In the top of the ninth, an error opened the gates. After Brian Benander (Richmond Heights, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius) singled, an Ohio Wesleyan miscue extended the inning. Benander would later score the tying run on a wild pitch.
Benander also played a role in the tenth inning. His two-out bases loaded single scored Skomra for what proved to be the winning tally.
Eden, the last of the sixth pitchers used by the Blue Streaks, earned the win by retiring all six batters her faced, three by strikeout.
John Carroll is now 7-5 on the year, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 4-11.
