JCU Volleyball Season Ends With Spirited Effort At Ohio Northern

Laura Sudo (#15) and Sarah Slagle (#2) put forth a spirited effort at Ohio Northern in the OAC Tournament quarterfinals
John Carroll gave it a go Tuesday night in Ada, but in the end, a spirited effort would not be enough to extend the 2010 season for the Blue Streaks.

Host and third-seeded Ohio Northern dashed John Carroll's postseason hopes with a 25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21 victory in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterinal round match held at the ONU Sports Center.

Box Score

The Streaks came out of the gate slowly in the opening game. Perhaps still unwinding from a three-hour bus ride on a weekday, JCU fell behind 9-1 and never fully recovered. The visitors did crawl back to within two points at 17-15, but the Polar Bears pulled away.

Game two played out in an almost opposite manner. A tight set for the first 27 points, Ohio Northern would score 11 of the final 13 points to win the game by ten tallies.

JCU refused to pack it in, however, and used a pair of Sarah Slagle kills to ward off a Polar Bear rally to claim game three by a 25-20 count.

The Blue Streaks looked poised to stretch the match to the limit in game four. Behind the serving of Teresa Noewer, rolled off seven consecutive points to erase a 17-12 deficit and turn it into a 19-17 lead. The host squad regrouped however, and stormed to the victory that ended the night and the season for John Carroll.

Slagle and Kerry Fox combined for 31 kills for the Blue Streaks, while senior setter Meredith McDiarmid had 41 assists in her final collegiate match to end up with 4,190.

John Carroll's season ends at a mark of 16-14, the Streaks' second winning season in the last three years.
