McGraw Scores To Give Streaks Early Lead, But Spartans Score Three Times Late To Claim Carroll Classic Crown

Caroline McGraw scored the opening goal of the match against Case Reserve

Caroline McGraw scored to give John Carroll a lead in the first half, but Case Reserve scored three times in second half to claim the 2009 Carroll Classic title with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.

Box Score

McGraw broke a scoreless tie late in the first half when she burst through the Spartans defense to track down a Caitlyn Walton pass. Her aim was true on a low ball to the left side to give JCU a 1-0 lead -- an advantage that would hold up the remainder of the opening period.

That lead would not hold in the second half. Ann Arruda would tie the match with her goal in the 53rd minute. The two teams traded chances before Amy Bishara put Case ahead for good in the 73rd minute when she put in a rebound off a Kaitlyn Yule shot. Yule would ice the game and the tournament crown with her second goal of the tournament in the 77th minute.

Case and John Carroll both won matches Friday to make today's match a de facto championship game of the 2009 Carroll Classic.

The Spartans improved to 3-1-1, while the Streaks fell to 1-3-1.

Walton, Amanda Buxton and Lauren Marchioni were named to the all-tournament team.
