22 games does not make a season, but starting out with 17 wins in the first 22 games is a noteworthy achievement for a program on the rise like John Carroll.
The Blue Streaks cemented the best 22-game start in program history Thursday with a sweep of Heidelberg University, winning game one by a 5-0 score before completing the effort with a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.
By running its record to 17-5, the 2009 Blue Streaks eclipsed the previous best 22-game start recorded by the 2003 squad that began 16-6 en route to a 24-15 finish and the school's first ever appearance in the Ohio Athletic Conference softball postseason tournament.
JCU has also won seven of its last nine games.
While starting pitcher Brittany Danilov kept the Berg off the scoreboard throughout game one, the offense steadily went about its business of providing run support. Angela Vistocco drove in the first run of the game in the second inning with a double, after which Michelle Murphy followed witha two run single.
Armed with a 3-0 lead, the Blue Streaks pulled away with single runs in the third and sixth innings.
Danilov went the distance, posting her fourth shutout of the year while scattering four hits. She struck out eight and walked one in improving to 11-4.
The Streaks wasted no time in staking their claim to game two. John Carroll would put together a seven-run, seven-hit first inning, sparked by a Samantha Thompson three-run home run and a Julie Marloew RBI triple.
Heidelberg closed to within 7-2 with two runs in the third, but the Blue Streaks would end the game with three runs in the fifth. Michelle Murphy drove in the first two runs, then Erin Riccardi drove in the final run with a double to halt the game with the eight-run rule.
Lauren Beatty started the game and went four innings to move to 3-0 on the year.
JCU is now 17-5 overall and 6-2 in the OAC, while Heidelberg falls to 4-20 and 2-6 in league play.
