Baseball Stumbles Early But Rebounds For Much Needed Split Against Quakers

Tim O'Brien drove in five of John Carroll's 12 runs in game two to help the Blue Streaks earn a split in Wilmington

Box Scores:  Game 1 vs. Wilmington  /  Game 2 vs. Wilmington

John Carroll stumbled out of the gate but recovered in time to earn a split against the Wilmington Quakers on the road Saturday afternoon and maintain a share of second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Wilmington jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in winning game one, 7-2. In the second game, JCU rapped out 17 hits en route to recording a 12-4 victory.

The Quakers jumped on John Carroll starter Chris Koller for five runs on five hits in the first inning and two more runs on two hits in the third to take a 7-0 lead.

JCU tried to climb back in, but managed just single runs in the fourth on an RBI double by John Skomra, and in the sixth on an RBI single by Brian Benander.

Chris Eggleton was charged with helping John Carroll earn a split, and just like he did the previous Saturday against Ohio Northern, pitched well enough in game two to keep the Streaks in position to do so.

After Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the John Carroll bats got rolling. Tom Hickey and Bryan Robinett had RBI hits as part of a three run third inning, and Tim O'Brien would give John Carroll the lead for good with a two run double in the fourth inning.

The Quakers pulled to within 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but John Carroll erased all doubt with four runs in the fifth, aided largely by three Wilmington errors.

John Hastings went 5-5 with a school-record tying five singles, Hickey went 3-4 with two RBI, and O'Brien went 3-4 with a double, a run scored and five RBI.

Eggleton moved to 3-0 on the year by scattering nine hits over six innings, allowing four runs while striking out four and walking two. Adam Jenkins pitched three innings and allowed one hit in earning his third save.

John Carroll is now 20-8 overall and 9-5 in the OAC. Heidelberg leads the league standings with an 11-3 record, followed by Marietta and John Carroll with 9-5 records.
