Travis Hammer won a key match for JCU against Case in the Blue Streaks season opener
John Carroll had a line-up featuring four wrestlers who were making their dual meet debuts for the Blue Streaks tonight, but it would be the veterans who carried the day in a 31-14 road win at Case Western Reserve University.
JCU had a 16-0 lead through three matches thanks to forfeit wins by
John Cobos (Avon Lake, OH, St. Edward) at 125 and
Greg Ryan (Warren, OH, Howland) at 141 that sandwiched around a 10-1 major decision by sophomore
Kevin Nycz (Parma, OH, Holy Name) at 133.
Case countered with three consecutive wins at 149, 157 and 165 that cut the JCU lead to 16-10 before senior
Travis Hammer (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) stemmed the tide with a 3-2 decision over Jacob Kornblatt at 174.
The Blue Streaks sealed the win with a pin by
Ben Adams (Livonia, MI, Livonia Churchill) against David Hildebrandt at the 1:49 mark of the first period.
Jim Nemunaitis (Broadview Hts., OH, Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) accepted a win by forfeit at 197 before Case won the bout at 285 to close the evening.
