Penalty Kick Proves To Be Deciding Factor As JCU Men's Soccer Prevails In Overtime

Ryan Ricart opened the scoring in what would become a 2-1 road win Saturday night in Wilmington
The penalty kick has proven to be both friend and foe of the 2009 John Carroll men's soccer season. Tonight in Wilmington, it was a very big friend.

Andrew Fatigati (Massillon, OH, Washington) successful conversion of a penalty kick with just under five minutes remaining in the first overtime period lifted the visiting Blue Streaks to a 2-1 win over the host Wilmington Quakers that helped keep John Carroll's postseason hopes alive heading into the final week of the regular season.

Box Score

The victory vaulted JCU into a tie for fifth place with Marietta with matches remaining next week at home against second place Baldwin-Wallace and seventh place Muskingum.

Ryan Ricart (Erie, PA, McDowell) opened the scoring in the 39th minute when he blasted a shot from 30 yards out. that score would hold up until Cayleb Paulino drilled a shot with his head into the corner of the goal mouth to deadlock the score at 1-1.

The decisive play occured at the 95:05 mark after Thor Eriksen (Birmingham, MI, Seaholm) was fouled attempting a shot in the box. Fatigati made the penalty kick to help JCU improve to 8-5-5 overall and 2-2-3 in the OAC. The loss set Wilmington back to 5-11-0 and 2-5-0 in the league.
