Blue Streaks Unable To Halt Skid Against Purple Raiders

Whitney Hamilton matched a career-high with 24 points against Mount Union
Box Score

John Carroll's season continued its recent downturn Wednesday night in Alliance, as the host Mount Union Purple Raiders sent the Blue Streaks to their third consecutive defeat with an 86-73 setback.

A back-and-forth game ensued from the start, with neither team enjoying an advantage greater than five points over the first 20 minutes. John Carroll's largest lead occurred when Laura Gruber (Minster, OH, Minster) sank a jumper with 4:54 left in the opening period that put the Blue Streaks ahead, 28-24.

Mount Union answered with a 7-0 run, only to have Caitlin Sureck (Medina, OH, Walsh Jesuit) make back-to-back jumpers that gave JCU a 32-31 lead with 32 second left to play in the half.

Stephanie Schwartz allowed the Purple Raiders to have the last laugh by making a jumper with 13 seconds remaining to give the host team a 33-32 lead heading to the locker room.

John Carroll enjoyed its only lead of the second half when Rachael Price (Johnstown, PA, Bishop McCort) made a three-point field goal on the opening possession. The Mount Union response this time was an 8-0 run that gave the Purple Raiders a lead they would never relinquish.

When a Whitney Hamilton (Akron, OH, Barberton) shot fell with 13:48 left in the second half, she brought the Blue Streaks to within a single point at 45-44. Mount Union would pull away from there, however, going on a 20-7 run over the next seven minutes to salt the game away.

Mount Union (11-4, 6-3 OAC) was led by 21 points from Amanda Rose, who was one of four players in double figures. The Purple Raiders simply shot the ball well on this night, making 32-58 (.552) from the field, 3-5 (.600) from three-point range, and 19-25 (.760) from the free throw line.

Despite a game-high 24 points from Hamilton which matched a career high, John Carroll (9-7, 4-5 OAC) could not overcome a 3-20 (.150) shooting performance from three-point range. Sureck added 16 points and Gruber contributed 11 for the Blue Streaks.
