Jeff Kosek, Louis Kastelic and Scott McKinney celebrate John Carroll's second goal in a 3-1 win over Denison
Box Score
In John Carroll's season and home opening match against Denison, all the scoring took place in a span of less than five minutes during the first half.
Fortunately for the Blue Streak faithful, JCU outscored Denison's in the midst of that offensive explosion to claim a 3-1 victory in a non-conference contest held Tuesday night at Don Shula Stadium.
After a few missed chances in the early going, the Blue Streaks finally broke through at the 17:45 mark of the first half. Jeff Kosek tracked down a pass from Louis Kastelic and beat the Big Red keeper for his first goal since 2006.
Just 25 seconds later, Scott McKinney converted a Kyle Buxman steal into John Carroll's second goal of the match.
It would be Denison's turn to strike at the 20:34 mark. Peter Shorten seized upon a deflected shot taken by Andrew Lash and rifled home what would be Denison's lone goal of the match.
The Blue Streaks answered in the blink of an eye. McKinney completed a combination play started by Joe Ciacchi and Kastelic for his second goal of the evening to give JCU a commanding 3-1 lead just 21:40 into the match.
Unbeknownst to the 300-plus spectators, that would be the final tally of the night.
Denison (1-1) actually outshot John Carroll, 10-6, and had all five corner kicks in the match. Matt DeMarchi made six of his seven saves in the second half.
