Whitney Hamilton's second half basket pulled JCU close, but Albion would eventually pull away in the first round of the Hornet Classic
Box Score
The cold shooting that plagued John Carroll in its season opener against Pitt-Greensburg apparently followed the Blue Streaks to Michigan Friday night.
On a neutral floor in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Albion broke open a close game midway through the second half to keep John Carroll winless on the 2008-09 campaign with a 69-51 victory in the opening round of the Kalamazoo Hornet Tip-Off Classic.
John Carroll held just one lead in the contest, going ahead 13-11 on a Lee Jennings jumper with 11:42 left in the openiong half.
The Britons responded with a 6-0 burst and would keep the momentum going, staking a 33-27 lead bat halftime.
JCU would score the first four points of the second half, and when Whitney Hamilton dropped in a lay-up at the 17:05 mark, the Blue Streaks trailed by just two points at 33-31.
That would be where the game turned dramatically in favor of Albion, as the Britons would score 30 of the next 43 points over the next 15 minutes to take a commanding 63-44 lead with 2:42 remaining.
In the critical second half, JCU was just 11-34 (.324) from the field and made just one of 12 three-point field goals attempted.
Albion (1-0), which won the rebounding battle by a 44-31 margin, was paced by a game-high 17 points from Brittany Kemperman. Nicole Dennis added 11 points as the only other Briton is double figures.
John Carroll (0-2) received a team-high 12 points from Caitlin Hubach and 11 from Jennings. The Blue Streaks finished the game 22-61 (.361) from the field, 3-21 (.143) from three-point range, and 4-10 (.400) from the free throw line.
