John Carroll posted wins over Geneva, Gettysburg and Westminster this weekend to capture third place at the Mount Union Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio.

The Blue Streaks -- who have won just nine matches in each of the last two seasons -- got off to a great start by sweeping Geneva on Friday to open the tournament. Later that night, JCU fell in five games to eventual tournament runner-up Adrian. The Blue Streaks lost the first two games before rallying to tie the match by claiming games three and four by identical 30-26 counts. Adrian eventually prevailed by a 15-10 score in game five to win the match.

On Saturday morning, John Carroll again found itself down two games to zero in its final pool play match against Gettysburg. But a stunning 30-20, 30-27 turnaround in games three and four set up a rally scoring fifth game. The Blue Streaks were able to finish the comeback this time with a 15-13 victory in the final frame.

In the third place mach, an inspired Blue Streak squad crushed Westminster, 30-19, 20-26, 30-22.

The 3-1 start is John Carroll's best since winning three of its four matches to begin the 2004 campaign.

Freshman setter Meredith McDiarmid was named to the all-tournament team. She finished the tournament with 170 assists and 12 aces. Junior Meagan Gambone had 47 kills to lead the Blue Streaks, while Emily Jackson tallied a tournament best 95 digs for the Blue Streaks
