The John Carroll University men's soccer team used a quality over quantity approach to advance in the NCAA Division III Championship with a 1-0 victory over Calvin Friday night at Roy Rike Field in Delaware, Ohio.
Despite being outshot by a 29-9 count, John Carroll came up with the one shot that mattered. After a scoreless first period, it would be the duo of Scott McKinney and Alex Bernot who punched in what proved to be the game winning shot. At 65:54 in the second period McKinney headed the ball in from a restart kick by Bernot.
Blue Streak keeper Matt DeMarchi would do the rest, as he recorded 10 saves to shutout the Knights.
With the win, John Carroll (13-8) advances to the second round of the national tournament. The opponent will be Transylvania (15-2-2) in what will be a neutral site game for the right to move on to the round of 16.
Transylvania knocked off the host team, Ohio Wesleyan University, by a 6-5 count in penalty kicks after the two teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation and extra time.
The second round match-up will be held at Roy Rike Field on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
