John Carroll Clicks On All Cylinders Against Oberlin For Largest Margin Of Victory In Six Years

Laura Gruber had a career-high 15 points against Oberlin

from staff reports

A 25-9 run that closed the first half propelled visiting John Carroll to an 87-53 victory over host Oberlin College in a non-conference contest that marked the Blue Streaks' largest margin of victory in six seasons.

The 34-point win was John Carroll's most decisive victory since a 90-56 triumph over Marietta College on December 8, 2001.

John Carroll sophomore Caitlin Sureck posted her second consecutive double-double as he led the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Laura Gruber had a game-high 15 points, while Alex D'Amico (13) and Whitney Hamilton (10) also reached double figures for the Blue Streaks.

The Blue Streaks were leading 20-18 with just over nine minutes to play when Gruber would score eight consecutive points to ignite a 10-0 run. Oberlin pulled to within nine points (34-25) on an Alyssa Clark lay-up with 3:09 to play in the half, but back-to-back three point field goals by Molly Scholla and D'Amico would start yet another run that gave JCU a commanding 45-27 advantage at the intermission.

Oberlin never got closer than 17 points for the remainder of the contest.

John Carroll (2-1), which won its second consecutive game, shot 38-79 (.481) for the game, and outrebounded Oberlin, 50-38.

Oberlin (1-2) was paced by 14 points from Clark, while Roneisha Hinney (12) and Alicia Smith (10) also finished in double figures.
