Freshmen Kyle Buxman and Joe Ciacchi came through big for the Blue Streaks, as third-seeded John Carroll went on the road and posted a 2-1 overtime victory over host Heidelberg Wednesday afternoon in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal round match-up held in Tiffin, Ohio.
John Carroll scored first, but not until 20 minutes into the second period. Ciacchi headed a corner kick by junior Louis Kastelic that went high into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Heidelberg capitalized on the chance to tie with a free kick with just under 17 minutes to play in regulation. Owen Botting took the kick and earned an assist after teammate Brian Juart succeeded with a header into the net.
Neither team could convert another goal before the end of regulation, sending the teams into extra time tied at 1-1. But at the 4:58 mark of the first overtime, Buxman rocketed a shot into the goal from a pass by Ciacci for the game winner.
#Matt DeMarchi# had nine saves in the game for the Blue Streaks, helping to overcome a 24-14 shot advantage by the host team.
John Carroll will now advance to the championship match for the tenth time in program history, where it will face top-seeded Capital on Saturday, November 2, at Bernlohr Stadium in Bexley, Ohio. The contest will begin at 2:00 p.m.
The Blue Streaks have captured three previous OAC tournament titles -- in 1993, 2000 and 2005. The OAC tournament winner receives an automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Championship.
JCU will be facing the third consecutive team in the league tournament which defeated the Blue Streaks during the regular season. Capital handed John Carroll a 3-1 setback on October 10.
The Streaks avenged the first two losses -- 2-1 over Marietta in the quarterfinals (following a 2-1 regular season loss on Oct. 27), and 2-1 over Heidelberg in the semifinals (following a 3-1 loss in the regular season on October 16).
